Digital Games in China and Chinese Speaking Area: Past, Present and Future

Chinese DiGRA is a community of games researchers from university and industry settings who work in a Chinese context or who have an interest in Chinese games and gaming, broadly defined. In order to build a platform for communication on videogames and to foster videogame researches in China and Chinese Speaking Area, Chinese DiGRA, sponsored by Top Fun Club, is organizing a conference on “Digital Games in China and Chinese Speaking Area: Past, Present and Future”.

This second annual Chinese DiGRA conference, to be held at Tsinghua University (Beijing, China), will continue to develop the Chinese games research community by providing a platform for interdisciplinary discussion about the past, present, and future of digital games. This conference will also lay a new foundation for dialogue between the academia and the industries.

The conference will take place over two days. Keynote speakers will include internationally recognized videogame scholars, insiders to the Chinese gaming industry and designers for games that have significantly influenced gaming communities in China and Chinese Speaking Area.

We invite papers that address the history, current state, and potential futures of Chinese games and gaming, the Chinese game industries, gaming communities, and game research in China and Chinese Speaking Area.

Paper proposals on (but not limited to) the following topics are welcomed

1) Digital Games: Past

  • Building History of Games
    – History of videogames and their industries in China and Chinese Speaking Area
    – Historical significance of games that have influenced/shaped the Chinese games communities, including Chinese games like The Legend of Chinese Paladin (仙剑奇侠传), The Sword Story (轩辕剑) and games from abroad including Final Fantasy, Baldur’s Gate and the like
    – Reflective personal and communal history of the games communities
    – Reflective works or synopsis on videogame related researches in China and Chinese Speaking Area
    – Comparative works are highly welcomed
  • Representation of History in Games
    – How videogames as a form of media reflect, construct, and reconstruct history
    – The development of historical research on games
    – The possibilities for historical narratives on games, whether expressed in scholarly writing, exhibitions, journalism, public projects, or historical games

2) Digital Games: Present

  • Research Questions, Theories, and Approaches in Videogames
    – Disciplinary/theoretical approach of videogame researches (media studies, history, psychology, education, and so forth)
    – Ongoing research works in the Chinese context
    – The current state of the Chinese game industries
  • Shaping History through Games
    – How can videogames influence/shape society, majorly in a positive way
    – Gamification, serious games, and educational games

3) Digital Games: Future

  • History in the Making
    – Future influences of the policies and practices of the videogame industry in China and Chinese Speaking Area
    – Future trends in the Chinese game industries
    – The future of game research in the Chinese-speaking world

Proposal for Individual Papers

Please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words and a cover sheet that includes the following information: a brief biographical note, your institutional affiliation (where relevant), and your contact details (including your email address). All submitted proposals should be in English. Presentations are welcomed in both English and Chinese. Depending on the number of papers that will be presented in Chinese, simultaneous interpretation services may be provided for non-Chinese speaking audience.

Proposal for Panel Discussions

We also welcome proposals for sessions including 3-4 panelists. We anticipate sessions of no more than 90 minutes that provide reasonable time for interaction with the audience (e.g. 60 minutes of presentation and 30 minutes of Q&A).

All presenters and panelists will receive a registration fee waiver. All works accepted will be considered for subsequent publishing possibilities.

第二届中华电子游戏研究协会年会 “电子游戏在中国:过去、现状与未来” 研讨会将于2015年7月3日-4日于清华大学召开,目前开放征稿。

中华电子游戏研究协会(Chinese DiGRA) 是聚集了对中国及华语地区游戏感兴趣的学界和业界的游戏研究者的社群。作为中华电子游戏研究协会的第二届年会,这次会议将继续通过鼓励针对游戏的历史、现状与未来的跨学科研究与讨论,来建设中国及华语地区的游戏研究社区。为提供产业与学界的交流平台,也为推动中国及华语地区本土游戏研究的发展,中华电子游戏研究协会偕同上方汇(Top Fun Club)发起了这次研讨会。

这次会议为期两天,将邀请国外游戏研究的领军人物、中国及华语地区游戏产业的见证者、以及创造了对中国及华语地区游戏造成巨大影响的游戏开发者作为主题嘉宾,共聚一堂探讨中国及华语地区游戏的昨天、今天与明天。

此次会议的征文题目包括,但不限于:

(一)电子游戏的过去:

  • 建构游戏的历史(特别欢迎比较研究)
    – 中国及华语地区游戏史
    – 中国及华语地区游戏产业的历史(个人史、行业史)
    – 形塑中国及华语地区游戏产业及玩家群体的游戏(包括中国及华语地区本土的游戏与外国游戏)及其历史影响
    – 中国及华语地区游戏研究领域的历史(反思性论文及研究综述均欢迎)
  • 游戏展现的历史/游戏的历史展现(Representation)
    – 游戏作为一种媒介如何反映、建构和解构历史(针对具体游戏分析,或者做趋势分析均可)
    – 以游戏为主题进行历史叙事(叙事形式包括但不限于学术写作、展览、报道文学、公共设施、历史游戏等等)的经验与反思

(二)电子游戏的现状:

  • 游戏研究的问题、理论与方法
    – 游戏研究的学科方法、理论工具(包括但不限于传播学、历史学、心理学、教育学等等)
    – 以中国及华语地区为背景的现行的游戏研究
    – 中国及华语地区游戏研究领域的现状(反思性论文及研究综述均欢迎)
  • 通过游戏塑造历史
    – 游戏的社会影响,主要针对游戏对社会造成的相对积极的影响(不欢迎上瘾研究)
    – 游戏化实践、教育游戏、严肃游戏等以影响现实为目的的游戏

(三)电子游戏的未来:

  • 形塑中国及华语地区游戏未来
    – 政策与热点事件对中国及华语地区游戏未来的影响
    – 中国及华语地区游戏产业的未来趋势
    – 游戏研究在中文世界中的未来发展

提交单篇论文

请将300字以内的摘要发到Felania Liu (liumf14@mails.tsinghua.edu.cn),并附个人简介(包括单位和联络方式)。摘要应为英文。现场报告中英文皆可。视论文状况,会议有可能安排同声传译。

提交成组论文

我们也欢迎3-4篇成组论文的提交。为促进充分的讨论,每组时长约90分钟(60分钟报告+30分钟讨论)。

第二屆中華數位遊戲研究協會年會「數位遊戲在中國:過去、現狀與未來」研討會將於2015年7月3日-4日於清華大學召開,目前開放徵稿。

中華數位遊戲研究協會(Chinese DiGRA) 聚集了對中國及華語地區電玩領域感興趣的學界和業界的遊戲研究者。作為中華數位遊戲研究協會的第二屆年會,這次會議將繼續通過對電玩遊戲的歷史、現狀與未來的跨學科研究與討論,建立起跨中國及華語地區(兩岸三地等)的遊戲研究社群。為提供產業與學界的交流平台,也為推動中國及華語地區本土遊戲研究的發展,中華數位遊戲研究協會偕同上方汇(Top Fun Club)合作發起了這次研討會。

這次會議將為期兩天,計畫邀請遊戲研究領域的領軍代表、亞洲遊戲產業的見證者、以及對中國及華語地區遊戲造成深遠影響的遊戲開發者們,亦期盼來自各界與會的產、官、學嘉賓共聚一堂探討中國及華語地區數位遊戲發展的過去、今天與未來。

此次會議的徵文主題包括,但不侷限於:

(一)數位遊戲的過去:

  • 遊戲的歷史建構(比較研究):
    – 中國及華語地區遊戲歷史
    – 中國及華語地區遊戲產業的發展(個人史、行業史)
    – 形塑中國及華語地區遊戲產業類型及玩家社群遊戲(包括中國及華語地區本土的遊戲與海外遊戲)及其歷史影響
    – 中國及華語地區遊戲研究領域的脈絡化(反思性論文及研究綜述均歡迎)
  • 遊戲展現的歷史/遊戲的歷史再現(Representation):
    – 遊戲作為一種媒介,其內容如何反映、建構和解構歷史(針對特定遊戲分析,或者趨勢分析均可)
    – 以遊戲為主題進行歷史敘事論述(敘事形式包括但不限於學術寫作、展覽、報道文學、公共設施、歷史遊戲等等)的經驗與反思

(二)數位遊戲的現狀:

  • 遊戲研究的問題、理論與方法:
    – 遊戲研究的學科方法、理論工具(包括但不限於傳播學、歷史學、心理學、教育學等等)
    – 以中國及華語地區遊戲為背景的文化與社會研究
    – 中國及華語地區遊戲研究領域的現狀(反思性論文及研究綜述均歡迎)
  • 透過遊戲塑造歷史
    – 遊戲的社會影響,主要針對遊戲對社會造成的相對積極的影響(不偏好成癮研究)
    – 遊戲化實踐、教育遊戲、嚴肅遊戲等以影響現實為目的之遊戲

(三)數位遊戲的未來:

  • 型塑中國及華語地區遊戲未來:
    – 產業政策與重要事件對中國及華語地區遊戲未來的影響
    – 中國及華語地區與相關地區電玩產業的未來趨勢
    – 遊戲研究在華語世界中的未來發展

本會亦歡迎3至4篇以特定遊戲議題為主的群組論文提案。為促進充分的討論,每組時長約90分鐘(60分鐘報告+30分鐘討論)。
